More than one metal in the mouth - Safe? 2 Years, 8 Months ago

The question below was e-mailed directly to me. Since I am not a medical professional I have posted it here to be answered by one of our dentist moderators.
I am in need of new filings to replace two that have fallen out obviously the replacement fillings won't be mrecury but I will still have some mercury in my other remaining fillings I have been told that having two or more differnt kinds of fillings can cause cancer due the now altered electrical enviroment in the mouth. I need to replace those missing fillings immediately but it will be sometime before the silver ones can be removed what material should the replacement fillings be?
Thanks,
Lori

Lori,
There is some truth in what you have been told but also some ambiguity or misleading information. It is true that the more diverse metals you have in your mouth, the greater the potential for electrical activity. However I have not seen studies that link different kinds of fillings with cancer.
There are basically three choices of materials for fillings: composite, porcelain (i.e. Cerek), and gold. I would not recommend gold when you still have mercury fillings in your mouth. Gold acts as a magnet and increases the out-gasing of mercury from your amalgams. Composite fillings are rated the same as amalgam in terms of durability and longevity--8 to 10 years. They are a good short-term choice over the much more expensive porcelain fillings.
If your dentist believes composite fillings don't work for back teeth, you should look for a dentist who is more experienced and knowledgable with the newer materials.

I have had mercury removed from the top layer of my teeth. I still have four teeth in the bottom that has mercury in them. I stay at the doctor's office. I have been told not to have these removed, but, I say ask a professional. What should I do? I am totally confused!!! Thank you!

Yes, you need to have all the amalgam fillings removed completely or you likely will continue to have problems. Mercury has been called the great "masquerader". The symptoms it causes looks like many other diseases that physicians seldom make the connection. So you need to find a Mercury Free Dentist on this website, call and discuss your needs and have your last 4 fillings replaced. Blessings.
